Roundup Weed and Grass Killer, or glyphosate is the most popular herbicide throughout the world. Biochemical giant Monsanto produces and markets Roundup as one of the safest weedkillers available. Millions of gardeners and agricultural workers use it and are entirely unaware of the health risks involved.

In June of 2018, Bayer, AG, a German pharmaceutical company, bought Monsanto for 63 billion dollars.

What is the Background Regarding the Roundup Lawsuits?

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), concluded its analysis of various studies on the safety and risks of Roundup.

The IARC concluded that Roundup is toxic, and exposure to this product can cause serious health problems. Despite the assessment, Monsanto still says that glyphosate and Roundup don’t pose any health risks to humans.

As a result of Monsanto’s public stance as to the safety of their product, agricultural workers, farmworkers, commercial spray applicators, and home users are still at risk.

When the IARC released their conclusions, a tidal wave of lawsuits began to be filed in the United States and elsewhere.

The IARC Working group found that the glyphosate and the glyphosate formulations caused both D.N.A. and chromosomal damage in humans and animals in utero, meaning there is another risk of exposure for women who are pregnant and exposed to Roundup.

Recently, the first Roundup lawsuit went to trial, and a former groundskeeper received an award of $289 million after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup.

What Are the Lawsuits Alleging?

In the lawsuits filed against Monsanto regarding their product, Roundup, the plaintiffs are alleging a combination of the following:

  • Exposure to the glyphosate contained in Roundup causes cancer
  • The label on Roundup doesn’t warn people about using the product

Monsanto knew or should have known exposure to Roundup could cause risks to people’s health, including cancer.

Monsanto incorrectly represented Roundup Weed Killer’s risks to the environment and people’s health, and as a result, they misinformed the public, farmers, and the government about the risks.

Does the E.PA. Have Glyphosate Limits?

While glyphosate is linked to many cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, many agencies still have a problem admitting it.

The Environmental Protection Agency posted a report that said that glyphosate didn’t cause cancer but removed it quickly from their website.

The E.P.A. continues to claim that glyphosate in the current exposure rates doesn’t exceed the limits established by the agency.

However, in 2013, The Environmental Protection Agency doubled the maximum glyphosate levels for crops and food, which makes it easier for Monsanto to market Roundup as a safe product.

As a result, multiple lawsuits have been filed against the Environmental Protection Agency that says the officials at the agency purposely changed their research in an attempt to support Monsanto.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Roundup Exposure?

The side effects of Roundup can range from stomach problems to cancer.

The other diseases that have been linked to Roundup include:

  • Birth Defects
  • Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Fertility Problems
  • ADHD
  • Liver Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • Autism
  • Depression

The most commonly reported symptoms associated with exposure to the glyphosate in Roundup include:

  • Burning Eyes
  • Irritated Eyes
  • Rashes
  • Blurred Vision
  • Burning or Itchy Skin
  • Dizziness
  • Breathing Difficulties
  • Sore Throats

How the Glyphosate Contained in Roundup Cause Disease?

Research has shown that glyphosate blocks a pathway in plants that are called shikimate pathways. It interferes with similar pathways found in human beings.

Glyphosate interrupts how several amino acids and enzymes function in your body.

Roundup can also imitate estrogen, which makes glyphosate an endocrine disruptor. While most people don’t have to worry about that, it’s important to note that we are already exposed to many endocrine disruptors already.

Estrogen mimickers can cause diseases in men and women that include:

  • Cognitive problems
  • Problems with reproduction
  • Weight gain in men
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Cancers, especially breast cancer

Recent studies have indicated that exposure to high levels of glyphosate, not unlike those in the” most at risk” category could be increasing their risks for A.L.S., depression, Parkinson’s, heart disease, and more.

Because of the IARC’s report on glyphosate contained in Roundup, there’s a sound basis to believe that exposure to Roundup and other herbicides that contain glyphosate, can lead to health issues.

Exposure to the glyphosate contained in Roundup can occur in several ways, including direct contact with your skin and through inhalation.
