Tips to Boost Pedestrian Safety During the COVID-19 Outbreak

With warmer weather arriving and most of New York still living under stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19, many people are walking more as a form an exercise, a way to get out of the house, or even an alternate method of commuting to an essential job instead of taking crowded public transportation. Though walking is healthy, enjoyable, and a good way to stay sane in a pandemic, it’s important pedestrians remain vigilant – just because fewer people outside do not mean caution is not paramount.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

It’s important for pedestrians to follow a few important tips to protect themselves when out on the streets and sidewalks in New York.

  • Use crosswalks and, if available, crossing lights. Even if you have the right of way, watch the road for approaching vehicles.
  • Use sidewalks when available. If no sidewalk is available, stay as far off the road as you can and walk against the traffic flow to increase your visibility.
  • Avoid any distractions. Don’t wear headphones, as they can drown out the noise of approaching cars. Don’t look at your phone – parking lots and street crossings are particularly dangerous if you are not paying attention.
  • Observe social distancing guidelines. Stay away from others on the street; distractions can prevent you from noticing other pedestrians and maintaining the proper distance. It’s also advisable to wear a mask in public; if you are in an area where you may run into others on the street, it’s even more strongly recommended.
